GEESE

Embden is most popular breed of geese. More are raised each year than all other breeds of geese combined. Their all white plumage, fast growth, and large size make them excellent for roast goose. Adult birds have pure white plumage; orange bills, shanks, and feet; and blue eyes. Because of their size and temperament, it is not advisable to keep them in small, confined pens with other breeds of poultry. A gander can be bred with three or four females. Average adults weigh: males 26 lbs. and females 20 lbs.

  • Males average 26 lbs.
  • Females average 20 lbs.

Brown African is an elegant breed, with a heavy body, thick neck, stout bill, and noble posture. Attached to the forehead of mature birds is a forward-inclining black knob. This knob takes two years to fully develop. Hanging from the lower jaw and uper part of the neck is a smooth dewlap. The plumage is a delightful combination of browns, buffs, grays, and whites. The most noticeable feature is a dark brown strip that runs from the head down the back of the neck. The legs and feet are dark orange to brownish. A heavy weight, this goose is preferred by many veteran goose breeders. A gander can be bred with two to six females. Average adult weight: males 20 lbs. and females 18 lbs

With noble movements on land and water, many people consider them to be the most graceful and beautiful member of the goose family. They are also the best layer of any breed of geese, best forager, and produce the least greasy meat. They are the “Watch Dogs” of geese because of their alert and talkative nature.
